How Surfside came to be one of Huntington Beach's most beloved communities
Surfside Homes by the Sea was developed in 1964 during a period of rapid growth along the Southern California coastline. As Huntington Beach transformed from a quiet beach town into "Surf City, USA," developers recognized the opportunity to create a thoughtfully planned townhome community within walking distance of the Pacific Ocean.
The community was designed with a distinctive Cape Cod architectural style — an intentional nod to classic New England coastal living, translated for the California sun. The 330-unit development was laid out around a network of lush greenbelts, creating a neighborhood feel rarely found in higher-density housing of the era.
Over six decades, Surfside has matured into one of the most desirable townhome communities in South Huntington Beach. Original residents who raised families here have been joined by new generations drawn to the same qualities: coastal access, community character, and a home that feels genuinely livable. The Surfside HOA was established to maintain and steward these shared spaces and values for all residents.
Cape Cod styling, thoughtful floor plans, and features designed for coastal living
Every home at Surfside reflects the community's signature Cape Cod aesthetic — clean lines, pitched rooflines, and classic detailing that has aged gracefully over sixty years. The architectural consistency throughout the community creates a cohesive streetscape while individual homeowners have brought their own personality to patios, gardens, and entryways.
Shared spaces and facilities maintained for all Surfside residents
Surfside's shared amenities were thoughtfully distributed across the community at the time of construction and have been maintained and improved by successive boards over six decades. The extensive greenbelt network is perhaps the community's most distinctive feature — open lawn areas winding between homes that give Surfside an open, park-like character uncommon in townhome developments.
South Huntington Beach — steps from the sand, close to everything
Surfside occupies a prime position in South Huntington Beach, placing residents within easy reach of the Pacific Ocean and the full complement of coastal California living. The neighborhood is walkable to local dining and shops, and a short bike ride from the iconic Huntington Beach Pier, Main Street, and Pacific City. The surrounding area is well served by schools, parks, and everyday conveniences.
How the association works and what dues cover
The Surfside Homeowners Association is governed by a seven-member elected Board of Directors, all of whom are residents of the community. The board meets monthly and all meetings are open to homeowners. Day-to-day management is handled by First Service Residential, one of the largest community management companies in the country.
HOA dues cover exterior maintenance of each unit, all common area landscaping, pool and facility maintenance, professional management fees, security patrols, and insurance on common areas. The association maintains a reserve fund for major capital projects and long-term infrastructure.
